PROZOFOL- Propofol Uses

Propofol is used for general Anaesthesia. The effects of propofol include slowed brain and nervous system activity. When under general anesthesia for surgery or other medical procedures, propofol is used to both put you to sleep and keep you asleep. Children two months of age and up can use it, as can adults.A patient in critical care who requires a mechanical ventilator (breathing machine) can also be sedated with propofol.

How Propofol works?

Propofol is a general anesthetic. It works by causing reversible loss of consciousness. This allows surgical procedures to be carried out without pain and distress.

Common side effects of Propofol

If you have any of the following symptoms of a propofol allergy: hives; trouble breathing; swelling in your face, lips, tongue, or throat, get emergency medical attention.

Propofol Infusion Syndrome is a syndrome that can develop with long-term use and can be fatal.

Notify your caregiver straight away if you have any of the following symptoms: short or weak breathing; intense pain or discomfort where the injection is being given; or a dizzy feeling that looks like you might pass out even after feeling awake.

Mild rash or itching; fast or sluggish heart rate; and modest burning or stinging around the IV needle are common side effects of propofol.

EXPERT ADVICE FOR PROPOFOL

Propofol helps induce unconsciousness (sleep) so that surgical operations or other procedures can be performed.

It is given to you as an injection by your doctor.

After use, you may still feel sleepy for some time. Do not drive or do anything that requires focus until you are sure the effects have subsided.

Inform your doctor if you are pregnant, planning to conceive or breastfeeding.

What other drugs will affect propofol?

These side effects can be exacerbated by taking other medicines that induce drowsiness or hamper breathing. Ask your doctor before using a muscle relaxant, sleeping pill, opioid pain reliever, prescription cough medicine, or medicine for anxiety, depression, or seizures (particularly valproic acid) after receiving propofol treatment.

Prescription, over-the-counter, vitamin, and herbal supplements are among the medications that may interact with this prescription medicine. Notify all of your healthcare providers of all medicines you currently take, as well as any that you begin or discontinue taking.
